Preparation

Decide where you will spend this time in prayer - a quiet room in your house or even escape to your car, or shed if you have one!

If your house isn't quiet enough then try listening to instrumental worship music on headphones

You will need:

  • Bible
  • Notebook
  • Pen
  • Coffee or tea

Tell other members of your household that you'll be praying for the next hour and ask them not to disturb you if at all possible!

1 Adoration

(10 mins)

Read out loud Psalm 136 (or another Psalm of your choice), worshipping God for who He is.
If you find your mind wandering off as you read the psalm, go back and read it again until you feel like you are focusing.

Write down a few of the attributes of God’s character that you particularly want to praise Him for today.

Then, listen or sing along to a worship song.
We suggest this one:

Or you may like to listen to another worship song that you like from Union Baptist's worship playlist or choose your favourite worship song on CD or Youtube.

Add a prayer of praise to God for who he is to the Prayer wall

2 Confession and receiving forgiveness

(5 mins)

Read Psalm 139 v23-24

Say sorry to God for the behaviours, words and thoughts in your own life that don't please Him. You may like to read aloud the following prayer based on Psalm 86:

In the day of my trouble I will call to you,
for you will answer me.
When I have done what is wrong
and displeasing in your sight,
O Lord, extend your love to correct me.
When I ignore those in need
and pretend that all is right with the world,
O Lord, help me to face the truth.
When I turn a blind eye to those
who have been stricken with poverty
and are facing the injustices that come along with it,
O Lord, teach me your way.
Enable me to extend your love;
and give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.
I will praise you, O Lord my God,
with all my heart;
and I will glorify your name forever. Amen.

Ask God to reveal to you anything else that He wants to put right in your heart. Wait on Him and open your heart as He shares any issues with you. When He does, don’t revert to feeling condemned. Scripture tells us that God corrects those He loves. He desires to commune with you, so when He shares issues, remember that it’s His love, not Him condemning you for your faults.

As you receive God’s forgiveness, ask God to show you if there is any forgiveness that you need to give. Forgiveness is a complete pouring out and releasing of any negative feeling that might be held against another person, church, or group. It’s not holding a grudge, or desiring revenge. It’s easy for us to become bitter against someone who has hurt us, but remember that you have also hurt others, including God. Pray for those that you feel negatively against and thank God that he has the power to release you from having to hold on to negative feelings.

Praise God that

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.

(Psalm 130:3-6)

3 Thanksgiving

(5 mins)

Read Psalm 95:1-7

Thank God for what he has done for you and the good things he has given you. Remember the big things (e.g helping you through a bereavement) and the little things (e.g. the weather today)

Write down a list of good things you are thankful for, then pray through them.

Add a prayer of thanksgiving to the Prayer wall

4 Prayer for yourself

(5 mins)

Read Romans 12:2 (our motto text for 2021)

Write down the ways in which you are influenced by the world around you.

Read Romans 12:2 again and ask God to show you the areas of your life in which He wants to transform your thinking. Write these down.

Ask God to renew your mind, to give you his perspective on difficult situations; to show you how he sees people whom you find difficult to relate to; and to give you joy and hope where you feel despondent and dissapointment.

5 Prayer for Union Baptist Church

(5 mins)

Pray through our church values using the list below to guide you. Give thanks to God for evidence you see of these values being embodied in the life of the church. Pray for God's help and guidance for areas where you sense we have more growing to do to fulfil these values.

  • Worshipful – God-centred, joyful lives filled with gratitude
  • Biblical – applying God’s truth in scripture to our lives
  • Prayerful – dependent on God for everything
  • Relational – loving and serving others across generations and cultures
  • Missional – Intentionally sharing the Good News locally and globally
  • Compassionate – reaching out to those in need, especially to the most vulnerable
  • Sacrificial – giving generously our time, talents and wealth

Write what you sense God is saying in relation to our values on the Prayer wall

6 Prayer for your community

(5 mins)

Write down the names of people you know who are far from God. You can include:

  • neighbours
  • friends
  • family members and relatives
  • colleagues

As God to reveal his love to them and ask him to show you how you could demonstrate his love to them in the next week.

7 Pray for the nation

(5 mins)

Pray the following prayers out loud

Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy
in this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious and fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us
from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Amen.

God of compassion,
be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation.
In their loneliness, be their consolation;
in their anxiety, be their hope;
in their darkness, be their light;
through him who suffered alone on the cross,
but reigns with you in glory,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Write down the names of those known to you who are sick or recently bereaved and lift them to God in prayer.

Thank God for those developing and delivering vaccines and providing care to the sick and vulnerable.

9 Listen

(10 mins)

Now it’s time to listen to what the Holy Spirit might be saying to you. Listening isn’t easy or comfortable and it takes practice; don’t be discouraged if you don’t ‘hear’ anything the first few times you try this, you will be growing in the holy habit of being still and waiting on God.

You might find that as you try to sit in silence, you keep getting distracted by random thoughts. Try turning each of the random thoughts into a prayer then dismiss it.  For example, if you start thinking about what you’re going to cook for dinner, thank God that you have a choice of food and pray that He will guide you in choosing healthy nutritious food which is good for you / your family.

You might find it helpful to periodically repeat simple prayers like “What’s on your heart God?” , “What do you want to show me today God?”,”What do you want to remind me about who your are today God?”, “Who do you want to bring to my mind today God?”

You might find it helpful to have some instrumental worship music playing in the background.

Try to simply be still and enjoy God’s presence

  • If God seems to bring things to mind but it’s not clear, write it down and ask God questions about it – “What do you want me to do with this?”, “who is this message for?”, “Can you help me understand this better?”. Remember that God often doesn’t give us the answers we think we want straight away because he wants us to spend more time with him first.
  • You may like to start with a blank sheet of paper and draw or sketch what you feel God might be showing you.
  • Remember that the primary ways God speaks to us are through His word. You may like to read back over passages we have studied together recently e.g Acts 27, Job 1-3 or passages you have been reading yourself and ask God to highlight to you what he wants you to hear in His word.

Share what you feel God has been saying to you on the Prayer wall

10 Respond

(5 mins)

Make a note of anything you want to follow up on for the rest of your day coming out of your prayer time, as well as anything you want to pray more into during your next prayer time.

You may like to finish your prayer time with the words of the Lord's prayer below or pray this in your own words:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.
