Access During Easton Street Car Park Demolition

The demolition works have now started and are expected to continue for approximately 40 weeks. As part of the worksite setup, a section of Birdcage Walk has been temporarily closed to allow worksite cabins to be installed.

This may make access from Railway Place car park look rather confusing. Although the path may appear to be completely blocked, there is a pedestrian diversion in place around the Brunel Shed, which brings you back onto Birdcage Walk. The alleyway down to the church remains open.

Access to the church remains open

The church remains accessible from both directions:

​

From Crendon Street, Birdcage Walk should remain open as far as, and including, our rear entrance.

• From the east end of Birdcage Walk, the route remains open as far as the steps/ramp down to the railway station.

• If approaching from the railway station/Railway Place, follow the pedestrian diversion around the Brunel Shed and back towards the Crendon Street entrance, then continue along Birdcage Walk to the church.

• Alternatively, you may find it easier to exit Railway Place car park via the London Road entrance and approach the church from that direction.

• ​

 We are also working with the Council to see whether we can put up some A-boards to make the church entrance more visible and help people navigate the area.

 Safety during demolition

During the demolition works, a covered pedestrian tunnel will be erected between the church and the car park. This is being provided to protect pedestrians from any potential falling hazards during the demolition. The tunnel will be well lit and have additional CCTV coverage.

There will also be a gate on the Birdcage Walk side of the alleyway. This will help to keep the alleyway secure overnight. The gate will be locked each evening and opened again each morning. We will also start locking our gate at the Easton Street entrance of the alleyway each evening, and opening it each morning.

 

Train Station car park

Please also be aware that the railway station has removed its £3.30 shopper parking rate. Unfortunately, this means that the station car park is no longer available as a low-cost option for short stays.

We appreciate that the next few weeks may feel a little confusing while everyone gets used to the new arrangements. Please allow a little extra time when travelling to church, particularly if you are parking at Railway Place.
